Chapter 6
The name was sour on her tongue. She hadn’t said it all summer, and even Sadie respected her enough not to say it. But there it was, rushing out in a sentence.
Lucas stepped toward her, but she stepped back, holding a hand up to keep the distance between them. “What are you doing here?” she demanded.
“I miss you.” He spoke like it was the most obvious answer.
She put a hand to her head, a wave of dizziness washing over, flooding her with emotions that she had thought she dealt with. “It’s not fall break.” It was weak, but that was all she could think to say.
“No, it’s not, but everyday that went by without being able to talk to you felt like another day learning how to live without breathing.”
Jane could feel steal sliding over her heart. She began to remind herself in detail what Lucas had done to her, why she shouldn’t be missing him too, even though familiarity cried to hold his hand.
“Yeah, well, some of us learned how to live that way, Lucas,” Jane said.
“And I don’t like the burning in my chest, so I chose to do something about it, and I’m here.” He was trying to defend himself.
“So you have a broken heart!” She surprised herself by yelling, but she wasn’t done. “You get used to it Lucas! You don’t get to do something about, because I couldn’t do something about it.”
“Jane.” Lucas stepped forward, reaching for her. As his fingers touched her shoulder, she pulled away.
“Don’t touch me.” She put her face in her hands, and felt how slick her cheeks had become. She didn’t realize she had started crying.
“Jane, can we talk about it.”
“No. I don’t want to talk.”
She turned to walk back toward her room. Mary would have a hundred questions to ask, and Jane didn’t know if she would be able to answer them all, but she almost preferred that over this. She had to stop walking again when Lucas ran around in front of her to stop her.
“We need to talk. It will do us both good,” he said.
She didn’t look up at him. If she looked at him now she would agree. The shock from earlier was subsiding, and she felt tired and weak.
He put a hand to her chin and gently lifted her face. “I need you to understand.”
“Okay.”
They found a bench to sit on, and sat in awkward silence for a few minutes. Finally, Lucas started by saying, “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
“But you did.” Jane looked at him like he was absurd. “You can’t just go and kiss another girl who isn’t your girlfriend and expect your girlfriend to be okay.”
“I know.” She could hear the hurt in his voice, but she didn’t want to believe it was real.
“If you know, then why did you do it?”
“I was bored, Jane. You were so happy with how things were, and I was desperate for something to change.”
Jane rubbed her hands down her face. “Oh, Lucas. I wasn’t happy.
